I went out west a year before I moved to Alberta just to look around. I liked the area around Sandpoint, ID the best. But no jobs for my line of work then. I went thru most of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Washington, British Columbia. I decided on Alberta because of the Bow Zones and less people-hunting pressure.
Sheridan, WY looks good.
Good Luck with your search!

Thanks again to all who have posted, emailed, PM'd and offered a place to lay over during the search. I will post an itinerary for anyone curious and once we get underway pix as we make our way along the route.

Everybody except Mark Holchin has been very helpful. I'm still waiting to hear about the honey hole in Mt he referred to in this thread. Guess I didn't buy him enough root beer in Portland.

Dan,

Are you and Dianne off yet? It was sure great meeting you both in Portland and really fun sharing a Sat. night table with you. Teresa and I had a blast. What fun!

Dan, I was waiting and waiting on that root beer - I never got it so I clammed up. Also, I talked to a hunter Saturday night who knows that "secret spot" very well, he has hunted in for many years. It is not so secret anymore, one of the big hunting show crews was in there filming their hunt recently. And the wolves have moved in also. Oh well, at least I enjoyed several good years there........

Jef, I recall hearing about the secret spot last year....from four or five other PBSers. It was really kind of funny. At lest we know how to communicate! I do owe you root beer though.

Tim,

We close the end of April. We pack up the horses and the bows in late May.

I'm going to put a toll booth at the bottom of the hill at the secret spot and make some real money.

Mark,
Isn't that secret spot somewhere between Idaho Falls and Dillon?

Tim, that depends on what the definition of the word "isn't" is.

Dan may not like it there. Too many pilgrims, and the buffalo are gone.

They do, however, still experiment with sheep. But that's more of a Montana thing, and of which I have no correct knowledge.

Mark, I guess that also depends on the definition of 'experiment'...

Good point Mark. I think I know where you mean, but for some reason I thought it was an Idaho thing. I could be wrong....

Dan, Thanks for the update. Have a safe trip.

It's snowing like hell in Dillon! Good to see moisture in the valley.

Dan,
If you and Dianne come through Dillon, please stop by. Our store is on Montana street. It's carp season at Clark Canyon!

Tim T, How long does carp season last? Our itinerary has us in Seeley Lake on the 27th where will set up in the interim as it seems central to where we will focus our search. We could run down to Dillon the following weekend? If carp are done by then maybe another outing of some kind?

Tim D, Yup, a great relief in so many ways to sell our place. We will miss our little farm in many ways, but it's nice to be able to start this chapter in our lives.

Dan,

We'll be chasing carp until around the end of June. The best time is around May 20th - June 20th.

Dan,

Are you two going to be at the BBTC before you leave? It'd be nice to see you both again before you head West.

We made it! It was fantastic trip and no issues of any kind.

We took our time coming across the good ole US of A and visited family and met some new friends. We left Leonardtown, Md. on Fri the 18th of May with two Horse trailers hauling three horses, three dogs and a ton of bowhunting and fly fishing gear. The first stop was in Lexington, Ky where we stayed a few days with my daughter. If you are ever in that part of the country and would like a personalized tour of the most incredible thoroughbred race horse breeding facilities in the world, drop me a line.
Our next stop was in Kansas City, Kansas -

We stayed one night there and that Cabela's is a great place to stop with horses....all FoC!

Next we drove to Mitchell, South Dakota and on to Spear Fish for a couple of nights at Doug Schlabaugh's place. Thanks Doug!

Beautiful country but not quite what we are looking for. We stopped the Vore Buffalo jump right off of I90. Very cool. The unique natrue of this jump is that it is a pot hole. I guess most of them are bluffs or cliffs. They estimate that over 2500 bison were slughtered in this jump over a 350 year period. here's a link - http://vorebuffalojump.org/

Next we stopped in Blegrade Mt where it was snowing. Welcome to Montana!!

Belgrade was a stop enroute to Seeley Lake where we looked at some property, but decided to go take a look at Thompson Falls.

Thompson Falls.....where do I begin?!?! Deer - more WTs than we can count in three days. Mulies - 6. Elk - over thirty in three days. Bears - one nice Cinnamon and two blacks. One moose - in our front yard! Three Mt goats and one BH sheep.

More pics to follow in the next few days as I get them transfered from my camera.

Awesome! Glad you two are there safe and sound.

I noticed the "our front yard" line as well. I hope that is good news and I hope you will be very happy wherever you end the search.

Keep me posted or I will be forced to track you down on my own.

Our front yard is where we are renting. it is a nice place with room for the horses and lots of wildlife viewing. We are still looking for our permanent home.

Howdy, Dan. Sounds like you're having quite an adventure already! If you are still in Thompson Falls, there is another PBS brother that lives there: Chad Sivertsen. He's a great guy and might be able to help you get acclimated. The PBS office has his contact info. Good luck!

Dan, didn't someone once say life is about the journey? Will you be at the MTB shoot in Grass Range
July 20-22.
