I'm waiting to hear that Uncle Barry shaved his beard, "appropriated" a hospital gown, and then started walking the halls giving the nurses and security fits.

I just hope he doesn't wear the gown sideways too.

Just an update as of this afternoon (3/16/15). As stated above, Gene is in good spirits and is in no pain. They confirmed he did have a mild heart attack but there was no "damage", which is a huge plus. Tests revealed there is 99% blockage in one area and stents aren't going to do the trick. So they are intending by-pass surgery ASAP. They haven't decided yet on the number of by-passes and likely won't until this evening. He asked them what the record is. They know how to fix the problem but they don't know exactly who on "the team" will be doing the surgery. Apparently their best guy moonlights as a bartender and they need to consider his schedule too. Seriously, thank you all for your best wishes and prayers. The whole family really does appreciate it. His private email is: genewensel1944@gmail.com. That ought to keep him from getting bored for awhile. Thanks. BW

I stopped at the hospital on my way home this evening and visited with Gene and Donna. The cardiologist had just finished talking with them. Today's tests revealed severe blockage in at least one valve. Gene is scheduled for by-pass surgery next Monday. He is going to be discharged tomorrow and will be at home for a few days. He and Donna are in good spirits.

Prayers from NC, Gene.
This is a good example of how what initially seemed like a bad thing (the incident while shed antler hunting) was actually a blessing (otherwise, the blockage could have been fatal if undetected). God is good!

Hope the procedure go well for you. Talked to a lot of people who feel better than ever afterwards. I'm sure Vargo will find you a "Super" male nurse......

Self administered sponge baths? Yuch.
Shed hunting this coming weekend?

I remember Gene saying in one of his books that if he were to go out from having a heart attack while dragging out another big buck that he would be OK with that. Well, It ain't deer season. Uncle Gene isn't going anywhere! Lots more big bucks out there waiting on his recovery.

As of today 3/22/15, he is scheduled for a triple by-pass at 8:30 AM tomorrow morning in Iowa City. Approximate four hour surgery, then he'll be in intensive care for a couple days. And if everything goes well they will likely let him go home Thursday afternoon/evening. He's in good spirits and appreciative for all the kind thoughts and prayers. Thanks to all. bw

Gene, I had a valve repaired in May of '06. You will feel a lot better on the other side of this process. Prayers continuing for you. Hang in there buddy.

I went through quad bypass in 2002 after a catastrophic heart attack. Tell Gene there is life after bypass! He will become a bonified member of the " Zipper Club" after his surgery. I wish him well in today's surgery.

Dave

That's great news Barry,

Hope Gene's recovery is speedy. Should have plenty of time to recover for deer season. Heck you might have to attach a ball and chain to slow him down now that he's got an overhaul and a tune up.....Ha!

Good news, Barry. It should be easier putting up stands this fall. More horsepower.

Now for a fast recovery. Bet the meal plan changes. Dang!
