A PBS friend and I have been building preference points in Iowa and should be able to draw any unit this year if we apply. My first questions are in regards to how the herd is doing. I know that EHD hit some areas hard a couple of years ago. Has that had a significant effect on the hunting?

I would also love to hear any suggestions on planning a hunt. I've heard varied reports on the quality of hunting available on public land. Are trespass fee arrangements on private land difficult to come by? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Some would have you believe that EHD coupled with liberal late season antlerless gun hunts have decimated the deer herd and all our big bucks are gone. EHD hit some areas hard while other areas a mile or two down the road were unaffected. Same is true with the late season hunting, depends on whether the landowner permitted the local gang bangers on their property or not. In some areas there is very little access due to leasing or landowners managing properties for their own hunting. Polite non-residents that are good with local diner socializing sometimes walk away with invites to hunt. Many farmers and owners of rural properties consider deer to be big brown rats and they want them dead. Hunting pressure and quality varies on public lands. Some places see very few hunters while others can be crowded. Some of the smaller tracts of public lands get ignored and can be very good. Big bucks can be had on public lands by those willing to invest the time and effort. Suggest you decide which zone you want to hunt and then concentrate your efforts on places to hunt.

Thanks John. That's what I was hoping to hear regarding EHD. I do have a couple of leads to follow up on and will see where those take me, but still hoping to look at all the options.
