Well all I am brand new on here, just joined this week.

I thought I might introduce myself a bit by sharing with you all about my first bow build that I am working on right now.
A friend from the westside of Washington gave me a few logs to help me get started. So I am working on a Elm Self-Bow. It has quite a few knots and a bit of twist so it is definitely a Character Bow. Not probably the best choice for a rookie, but I'm working with what I have on my "extravagant budget", $0.00.

The bow as I have it layer out will be 64" tip to tip, 1 1/4" handle, 2" mid-limbs, with 3/4" tips. It is basically done in a Flatbow style.

At present I have the entire left side roughed out to shape, and all but about 24-28" of the right side roughed out as well. I just have an area from just above my handle, through the handle and extending about to about mid limb on the right side to finish roughing out. Then I'll be on to thinning the limbs and see if I can get it bending.

I'm going to try to upload some pictures, hope it works.

This will be fun to watch. I have had a few false starts, but would love to build my own selfbow some day, then hunt with it and actually kill something with it.

That would be a challenging piece for a bowyer of virtually any experience level, let alone for a first timer. Best of luck to you sir.

I just wanted to say thank you for all the kind words. I really appreciate it, not all the places that I have shared this on have been so kind.

I finished roughing it out today. I wanted to try to get it floor tillering, but ran out of time, besides I do not want to rush anything on this at all.

Here's the latest picture, not sure if you can tell much. All the work I did today was with the file and my rasp, nice and slow.

Well I got a bit more work done on my bow project today. It was slow going as I only had a hour or so to work today.

Today I started working on beginning to thin the limbs down. I got a bit done on the top limb today, but there's still plenty more to do before I get it to start bending.

I'll just keep taking it slow and steady. Its no race, so eventually I'll get it done.
