Mule deer doe. 10/14. Spot and stalk. Shot with osage selfbow of my making and some arrows purchased at PBS auction 2014. Eclipse broadheads. Also pictures of camp, sunrise with Bernard Swank in foreground and dinner (liver and onions, the best I ever had!)

This was a first for me. Up until a couple of years ago it was illegal to use a bow during the Wisconsin gun season. That nonsense was finally changed, and I have carried a bow during gun season ever since. This year was my first archery success during a Wisconsin gun season.
I had looked at my phone to check the time just three minutes before legal shooting time ended on opening day. When I looked up this doe was headed my way and the shot wa taken with two minutes to spare.

Great shooting Scott! Them bugger's are tough to kill! A deer hasn't got anything on a squirrel when it comes to ducking an arrow!

I was surprised the squirrel was still there when the arrow arrived. I've missed more than I can count

This is a buck taken on the evening of 11/6 in west central Illinois with a Robertson Longbow, cedar shaft and eclipse head. I had decided if he came within range a shot would be taken. Of course, I encouraged him with a snort/wheeze while 40 yards out and parallel to me. He came into ten yards then pawed the ground and peed on his hocks putting on a pretty good show. This was the smallest of the three bucks I saw that evening, but Kevin Dill's comments about having fun stuck in my mind. I stayed with Paul Ladner at his cabin from 11/5-11 then making a short drive to my hunting spot. It certainly made things easy processing the meat while enjoying a few adult beverages.

Nice Charlie...that might be a Meat Pole first! Are their necks always that big or is he rutting?

Please excuse the quality of the photograph.
Pigger, my 58# Osage selfbow, managed to come through when needed once again. Haven't had time to write up a recounting of the hunt.

Good job Walt! Congrats. I hunted this AM and froze my butt off and only saw one button buck. I probably would have shot him if he was five years older. Ha. This afternoon I came REALLY close to getting a good one. Had him at 18 yds. walking broadside. I was going to wait until he was at like 16 yds. when the angle was a little better. For no reason at all he turned his head to the right, saw me and locked up. After thinking about it I think he might have seen my breath since it was cold and sunny. I had tension on the string but couldn't believe he saw me since I was tucked in a cedar.. but he did. Big, symmetrical 5x5 with long main beams and 6" browtines. Let me put it this way, it was about as close as you can get without actually shooting. By the way, he was the only deer I saw all afternoon. bw

Thanks Mike and Mike.
This buck I don't think falls in to the GIANT category, but it was a nice deer for me and my very limited time to hunt. The hunt took place on Nov. 4th 2014 and it was a morning that I will not soon forget. That morning I saw a total of seven different bucks all because of one hot doe. One hot doe is all it takes for a magical day in the woods and I was fortunate enough to be there and witness it all. Breeding, chasing, fighting and posturing around for a good hour and a half all within a hundred yards of me. Do to work I haven't been out since then and miss the woods. But I'll be back after them next year and dream to have another day like that one, with or without a harvest of an animal.
