I met up with Greg Barmer in Seward for lunch on Friday. Greg and I discussed opportunities for a membership hunt in Alaska and he said he'd had a great hunt out of Zachar Bay Lodge on Kodiak.

I just talked to the ZBL people and they can accommodate up to seven additional persons in camp the second week in November. I was thinking about going down to the Oregon blacktail hunt the same week but I think this one will be a nice compliment to that hunt, two blacktail hunts, two subspecies, at one time in the Pacific West!

The cost will be $700 for the lodge expense for seven nights and $35-65 per day for a skiff drop off depending on the location and distance. If nonresident participate it would be $85 license and I believe $150 for each deer tag. I forgot to ask about flight for Kodiak to the lodge.

Who is potentially interested?

Hmmm an interesting idea. If this comes together, I could be interested. I would have to make a few things come together, but it could be doable for me.

I am working on contacting Alaska members, want to give them first crack since spaces are limited. So far it is me, Ben Pinney, one maybe, one dang-it I have a conflict; I have a few more to contact and ask.

Anyone else better figure out if they are interested real quick as I intend to get this solidified, pronto!

Seven spots available to us. We are on the schedule. Mountain goats 4-5 hour climb behind the cannery (lodge) by Registration permit.

Final cost for flights from Kodiak will be dependent upon numbers and flight service used, expect $600 for planning purposes.

I will check into taking my truck to Kodiak from Homer by AMHS ferry to transport gear and meat if it would prove beneficial. Would also be a potentially cheaper way to get to Kodiak???

Man o man, I will be watching this one; jealous the entire time.

Kodiak is the coolest place on earth IMO. Even the airport makes me want to scheme to get another week of vacation!

From Linda Eaten at Zachar Bay Lodge)

Hi Steve,

Thank you for your phone call. I have penciled you on our calendar for the Look-Out House and the Watchman House. The Look-Out House has a sleeping loft with 4 beds. The Watchman House has the main room and a bedroom with 3 beds and a small room off of it with a bunk bed.

Attached to this email is prices (sorry about the calendar and dates, but the price is the same for 2015).

Please write or call if you have any questions.
All the best,
Linda

Zachar Bay Lodge is a great place to chase blacktail deer. I have made two trips there and it is one of my favorite places to hunt in Alaska. The Eatons (owners) are first class and will take care of you. Below are some of my random thoughts from my previous trips.

1. It's gonna rain (a lot) so good rain gear is a must.
2. Pray for snow. Snow will bring the bigger bucks down, otherwise they will be up high.
3. The deer should be in or starting the rut when you get there. We went thanksgiving week and they were in full rut chasing does. (We saw deer every day)
4. Hunting behind the cannery is not very good at least when we were there.I would recommend using the skiff and have them drop you off and pick you up.
5. The bears will be out we saw bears most days out. Hint if they want the trail you are walking on let them have it (it's not fun hanging to wet grass on a side hill with one hand and a longbow in the other to let the bear pass underneath :)
6. The cabins are nice and warm. We had a stove to cook on and looked forward to it after a full day of climbing and being wet.
7. It will be a fun hunt.

I am now opening two spots to non-residents of Alaska. For legal reasons, this hunt is only available to U. S. Citizens.

Goats are only available to residents.

This should be a really high odds opportunity to take red fox and cross fox too.
